MUSIC FOR AARDVARKS AND OTHER MAMMALS
Music for Aardvarks & Other Mammals is Groove's signature music class -- a refreshing alternative in the world of kids' music classes. We deliver a hand clapping, foot stomping, drum drumming good time for both kids and their grown-ups. Our classes are offered in Larchmont (year-round) and in Dobbs Ferry (fall, winter + spring).
What really distinguishes Groove’s classes from all the rest are the accomplished musicians and educators who lead the way through this musical hullaballoo. On any given day, you will find our highly engaging musicians on guitar, ukulele, saxophone, violin, drum-set, double bass, harmonica, keyboard and sharing the best vocals around. The music is innovative, intelligent, and equally appealing to both kids and their parents.
Directed by Lesley Barovick, a classically-trained musician and mom of two young children (she headed up Lincoln Center’s jazz development efforts under Wynton Marsalis in a previous life), the Aardvarks program, featuring original rock, blues, and folk-influenced music and chants, free-form dance breaks, and instrumental jam sessions in a sunny, high-ceiling studio with a punchy purple floor, is a welcome alternative to traditional yawn-inducing classes.

Music for Aardvarks was created in 1997 in Brooklyn, NY by rock musician/composer and father of three, David Weinstone. With influences of rock, blues, ballads, folk, jazz and pop, Aardvark songs uniquely reflect and celebrate the lives of children growing up today. The music is innovative, intelligent, and irresistibly appealing to both kids and their parents. To date Weinstone has written and recorded over 200 Music for Aardvarks’ songs many of which are featured daily on ![]()
Music classes for children can be endurance tests for everyone involved. But even adults say David Weinstone’s Music for Aardvarks is one of the exceptions. Weinstone writes songs for children growing up urban…and the classes are more like parties.
